DeWitt, NY - The New Process Gear Inc. gear plant will layoff about 300 people next week as a month-long strike at American Axle continues to ripple through the industry.
The plant's owner, Magna Powertrain confirmed the layoff, which begins Monday. The New Process Gear plant employs about 2,800 workers.
The company furloughed 239 workers for a week beginning March 10 as a result of the American Axle strike.
The strike has affected General Motors Corp. forcing it to close or partially close 29 plants and layoff more than 41,800 GM workers. New Process Gear makes transfer cases, devices that go into SUVs and trucks made by Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Co. and GM.
