2008 Chicago Auto Show Preview: Volkswagen Routan Just for U.S.

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen has announced that it will unveil its new minivan, the Routan, at the Chicago auto show in February. VW says the Routan, jointly developed with Chrysler, is intended "especially for the U.S. market."

The name "Routan" is intended to connect the new model to VW's European vans, the Touran and Sharan, while containing what the German automaker calls an English word: "route." The minivan will be built at Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant. Although it was designed with Chrysler, VW says the look both inside and out "of course" is in line with its own "clear design concept."

The seven-passenger minivan is about 197 inches in length and is intended to be "splendidly adapted" to U.S. minivan drivers' needs in terms of space and functionality, VW says. Images and full specs were not released.

Volkswagen is targeting sales of 800,000 vehicles in the U.S. market by 2018, in part by introducing such new U.S.-tailored vehicles as this one and the Passat CC, which made its debut this week at the Detroit auto show.

Alpine Electronics products in 2009 Ram

By Brent Snavely Alpine Electronics of America Inc. in Farmington Hills announced that two of its products are featured on vehicles introduced earlier this week at the North American International Auto Show as part of an effort to raise its profile in the original equipment automotive industry.

Alpine announced Sunday it is supplying the sound system for the 2009 Dodge Ram and on Monday .

Todd Kovach, vice president and general manager of Alpine, said Alpine’s product wins with the Detroit 3 are a direct result of the company’s growing presence in Farmington Hills.

Alpine, known for its aftermarket products, is hoping to gain ground as an original equipment supplier against competitors such as Framingham, Mass.-based Bose Corp.

“We are one of the leaders in aftermarket multimedia products,” where product development life cycles are often a year or less, Kovach said. “We can bring products to market in the original-equipment space faster than our competitors, and we think that gives us a competitive edge.”

When Kovach joined Alpine six years ago, the company had about 20 employees in Farmington Hills. Today, Kovach said, the company has 53 employees there and is anticipating growth over the next several years.

Alpine’s Farmington Hills offices include sales, marketing and engineering employees as well as a product testing and validation center that the company began operating last year after an investment of about $2 million to $3 million.

About 80 percent of the research and development for the Dodge Ram occurred in Farmington Hills, Kovach said.

“It is part of our strategy to develop our products in the markets where they are sold,” Kovach said.

Alpine is a subsidiary of Iwaki, Japan-based Alps Electric Co. Ltd. The company had global sales of about $1.64 billion in 2006 with 38 percent, or $623 million, of that in North America, according to Automotive News.

While the company’s original equipment division is based in Farmington Hills, its North American and aftermarket headquarters is in Torrance, Calif.

Kovach said Alpine’s 2007 original equipment sales are likely to remain flat in 2008 because of expected production cutbacks by the Detroit 3 but will then increase in 2009 and 2010 because of recent contract wins.

Chrysler starts production of Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs

16th January 2008
By Staff Writer

Chrysler has announced that production of the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs is underway at Chrysler Saltillo Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

The Saltillo Plant, which also produces the Dodge Ram Mega Cab, Dodge Ram Power Wagon, Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 models, and Dodge Ram 3500 Chassis Cab, takes on production of the Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs as part of Chrysler's Flexible Manufacturing Strategy.

To support new commercial vehicle production, Chrysler invested additional $48 million into the plant, resulting in a 120,000 square-foot expansion that allows the plant to produce commercial vehicles and accommodate new frame configurations. This follows an additional $210 million investment into the plant for production of the all-new 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab in 2005.

In addition to increased production capacity, the expansion enables the plant to manage the greater complexity of the all-new 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs.

Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president of manufacturing at Chrysler, said: "A continuous showcase of advanced manufacturing capability and adaptability, the Saltillo facility is one of our most versatile plants and a great example of Chrysler's flexible manufacturing ability."
