Chrysler Financial Partners with Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County to Construct First Affordable 'Green' Home in Southeast Michigan

Home will be Certified by U.S. Green Building Council for Meeting Environmental Benchmarks in Design, Construction and Operation

Last update: 12:20 p.m. EDT Sept. 4, 2008
PONTIAC, Mich., Sept 04, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County, with the support of Chrysler Financial and Gontina Building and Design, will raise the walls in Pontiac, Mich., this week on the first affordable "green" home in Southeast Michigan. The home, being built at 457 Ferry Street will meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification standards.
"Chrysler Financial is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work," said Darryl Jackson, Chief Operating Officer - Chrysler Financial. "We are extremely excited to partner with Habitat for Humanity to not only benefit the Pontiac area, but the environment as well. It is remarkable to see what can be accomplished by bringing together local businesses and community members committed to the same goal."
Chrysler Financial employees will join volunteers from Habitat, in association with Gontina Building and Design who donated project planning, home design and LEED consulting services, to construct an environmentally- friendly, one-story home using building materials from Michigan-based companies. The completed home will use 30 to 50 percent less energy than other homes of similar size, saving the homeowner up to $1,000 per year in utility bills. In addition, the home will feature sustainable materials including bamboo and cork flooring and structural insulated panels, and accommodate the potential for solar technologies in a variety of areas. Other features such as low volatile, organic compound paint and paperless drywall in the bathrooms will provide a healthier indoor environment.
"We are thrilled to have Chrysler Financial as a partner in this historic building project for Habitat," said Jonathan Reckford, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity International. "Green homes are not only good for our environment, but the substantial energy savings they foster also increase their affordability for families with modest incomes. And that's a win-win for everyone."
In 2007, the U.S. Green Building Council extended its LEED certification process to include homes in its nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED-certified homes give owners an immediate and measurable effect on their home's performance, measured in eight categories including innovation, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
The project strives to become the standard in build and design for future Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County projects. The home will be sold to a qualified low-income family for a price that equals the Habitat cost of construction, which will be approximately $97,000. The completion of the project will be celebrated during a formal ceremony on Oct. 11, when the new owners will be presented with the keys to their green home.

First Test: 2009 Dodge Ram Sport R/T

First Test: 2009 Dodge Ram Sport R/T

Nobody knows better than the engineers and designers at Dodge that its 2009 Ram needs to break the mold. It's not helping that huge hurdles are in the way-oil breaching $120 a barrel, economy cars flying of dealer lots, and that Ford's about to unleash an all-new F-150 (check out our next issue). It's also no secret that Chrysler is suffering from the backlash of foisting too many mediocre products onto the public.

Will the new Ram make a difference?

To begin, much of the Ram is not modified (the frame is largely carryover, there are three cab configurations, three engine choices-auto and manual gearboxes are the same-and three box lengths). Still there is plenty here to separate the new Dodge Ram from its other half-ton competitors, especially the two recently revamped trucks (from GM and Toyota).

Most notable, all new Rams now use a rear coil-spring suspension with trailing arms to locate the live axle, la Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. This change saves about 40 pounds in weight and allows frame engineers to better control many of the typical harsh ride frequencies and vague handling issues endemic to leaf-sprung pickup trucks. The front end remains similar in architecture, but does use a liberal amount of high-strength steel and aluminum to save another 10 pounds at each corner. All that weight saving came in handy as Dodge has finally created a true Crew Cab model for its Ram. This new cab length, which also requires a smaller bed box, allowed Dodge to incorporate two weatherproof, lockable storage bins into the bed's fender sides. The storage areas are easily accessed from either side of the truck and offer enough room for tools, sports gear, or camping supplies.

All three engines (3.7-liter V-6, 4.7-liter V-8, and 5.7-liter V-8) remain the same and oddly offer similar fuel-economy numbers. The V-6 is rated at 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque, is standard on two-wheel-drive Regular and Quad Cab models, and is rated at 15/20 mpg for the manual and 14/20 mpg for the automatic, with a flex-fuel version available for fleet sales. The 4.7-liter V-8 has 310 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, is standard on all 4WD models and the Crew Cabs, and is rated at 13/19 mpg for 2WD and 13/18 for 4WD. All 4.7-liter V-8s are flex-fuel capable. The new-generation 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 has smarter variable valve timing, a two-stage intake, and a more aggressive MDS (multiple displacement system) calibration, all of which offers 13-percent-more power with four-percent-more fuel efficiency. The big V-8 is rated at 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque, is standard on all Sport and Laramie models (an option on all others), and is EPA-rated at 13/19 for 2WD, and 13/18 for 4WD models. It's worth noting 89-octane fuel is recommended.

Muscle car raffled for charity

Proceeds to aid four non-profit agencies

Special to The Times-Tribune

It’s like turning back the hands of time — back to 1970 and the days of high school street parties and souped-up muscle cars that roared down the road.

Pickard Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Corbin currently has on display a rare version of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, reminiscent of the muscle car era. The most exciting feature of this recreated legend from nearly 40 years ago is that one lucky person will win it, thanks to a special raffle for charity.

The Challenger SRT8 is HEMI Orange Pearl with black stripes and is powered by a beastly 425 horsepower 6.1 liter HEMI V8. It also features a canted center console, navigation system, and 13-speaker KICKER SRT audio system with AM/FM, six-disc DVD, MP3, and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 was engineered with a focus on the five pillars of every SRT vehicle: bold exterior design that resonates with the brand image, a race-inspired interior, world-class ride and handling across a dynamic range, a standout powertrain, and benchmark braking.

Dodge launched the idea of the rebirth of the Challenger during the 2006 Detroit Auto Show as a concept car. Dodge has built just 6,400 units for sale in the United States for the 2008 model year, and each will have a limited-edition numbered plaque on the dashboard to warrant its authenticity as a rare vehicle. All 6,400 units have been pre-sold by dealers across the country.

Retail value of the raffle car for charity is just under $42,000. Due to limited initial production numbers, many Challengers across the United States have sold for considerably more than their sticker prices.

Raffle tickets for the car are on sale now at all participating Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky Dodge dealers. Raffle tickets are priced at $5 each or six for $25.

Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to The Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and Make-A-Wish Foundation. The raffle drawing will take place in November 2008.

For more information contact Pickard Chrysler at 528-6681 or to get a closer look at the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, visit the showroom on Cumberland Gap Parkway in Corbin.

Ram, Nitro, Wrangler pace Chrysler Canada sales

calendar (1K) Posted Wednesday, Sep 3, 2008 at 5:01 pm in Company News, Competitive Landscape

Chrysler Canada today reported sales of 15,548 for the month of August, with a positive showing by several key vehicles (August 2007: 20,503). The company’s results calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) remained stable, with sales of 162,299 for the period January through August, compared to 162,862 in 2007.

“August sales reflect the shift Canadian buyers are making from a lease focus to a purchase-oriented automotive market,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO of Chrysler Canada. “In spite of the softening, unprecedented pricing on many of our Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge products resonated with shoppers and generated solid sales.”

August Highlights

The Dodge Ram light-duty pickup truck posted another very successful month, achieving sales of 3,131, compared to 2,752 in 2007, an increase of 14 percent.

“Our Dodge Ram light-duty pickup truck has experienced phenomenal success in 2008, with sales up 25 percent CYTD over the same period last year,” said Dave Buckingham, Vice President of Sales. “This is great news considering that we are bringing an all-new, completely redesigned light duty Dodge Ram to market later this fall. With 35 new or improved features, our 2009 Ram is clearly a game-changer that raises the bar for the competition.”

Demand for the Dodge Nitro rose significantly in August, with sales of 1,047, an increase of 31 percent compared to the same month in 2007. Sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country more than doubled over the August 2007 level, with combined sales of 2,890 (2007: 1,388).

The iconic Jeep Wrangler posted strong sales for the month, achieving 949 units sold, an increase of 18 percent over 2007. The Dodge Challenger SRT8® has been building momentum and driving showroom traffic in spite of limited availability. The 2009 Dodge Challenger is launching in September with an increased range of models and powertrains, reaching a broader spectrum of driving enthusiasts.

Production began in August of the all-new 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). The Chrysler Aspen HEV will be available for sale beginning this fall, and offers seven-passenger seating combined with a blend of performance, utility, functionality and significantly improved fuel economy. Combined with fuel-saving MDS technology, the advanced, two-mode hybrid technology delivers an overall improvement of more than 25 percent in fuel economy and up to a 40 percent improvement in the city.

September Sales Promotions

For the month of September, Chrysler Canada’s incentive program will focus on aggressive cash positions with competitive monthly payment options and total discounts up to $13,500. For example, the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab® SXT 4 X 4 featuring a HEMI® V8 with fuel-saving Multi-Displacement System (MDS), chrome wheels, and power equipment package is available for $23,898, or $165 bi-weekly. The Dodge Ram pickup is Chrysler Canada’s highest-selling vehicle.

Total discounts on the 2008 Jeep Wrangler and 4-door Wrangler Unlimited now equal up to $5,000. A well-equipped Jeep Wrangler Sahara with modular hard top, air conditioning, aluminum wheels, power equipment package and legendary 4 X 4 capability can be purchased for as little as $155 bi-weekly.

In addition to exceptional pricing, Chrysler Canada is launching the all-new “We’ll Pay Your Way Till 2009″ initiative. Under this program, Chrysler Canada will cover all monthly purchase or lease payments up to $1,500 through the end of 2008. Customers also have the option of selecting a cash rebate of $1,250. “We’ll pay your way” is not a payment deferral, but an innovative incentive plan that covers nearly all 2008 model vehicles (excluding Dodge Sprinter and Challenger), as well as the 2009 Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot.

Chrysler circulating plug-in hybrids to dealers

NEW YORK - Chrysler LLC has been demonstrating plug-in hybrid prototypes to some dealers that are further developed than those previously shown by the automaker, the company's president said.

In comments Tuesday at the Motor Press Guild in Los Angeles, Chrysler Vice Chairman and President Jim Press said the vehicles are being developed by Chrysler's Envi unit, which the automaker created last year to create electric vehicles and other advanced propulsion technologies.

Chrysler spokesman Rick Deneau confirmed the comments and said the prototypes are further along than the concepts the company unveiled in January.

"We are excited about the Envi organization, and we continue to work toward electric vehicles," Deneau said in an interview Wednesday.

Press said the vehicles can reach 60 mph in less than four seconds and have a range of at least 300 miles, The Los Angeles Times reported. He said the technology would be useful in off-road vehicles and might be used in the Jeep brand, the Times reported.

Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler, along with General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., have been working frantically to develop new hybrid electric powertrains as consumers shun the automakers' traditionally popular large vehicles.

In January, Chrysler showed three concept cars at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit featuring pure electric and hybrid electric powertrains. The company has not provided a timeframe for development of the Chrysler ecoVoyager, the Dodge Zeo and the Jeep Renegade, but spokesman Nick Capa said Wednesday the company would have Envi products on the road within three to five years.

Chrysler also is working to develop hybrid and diesel versions of its top-selling Dodge Ram truck. It has also invested more than $3 billion in investing in new powertrains, including a fuel-saving engine called the Phoenix that it expects to arrive in the 2010 model year.

Cummins Heavy-Duty ISX engine family will incorporate the XPI fuel system, proven cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, the Cummins VGT turbocharger, Cummins Particulate Filter, and advanced electronic controls for the best performance, fuel economy, and reliability.

“Cummins expertise in engine system integration means that we have the capability to make the engine systems and aftertreatment technologies work together seamlessly,” said Steve Charlton, vice president, Heavy-Duty Engineering. “The addition of the new SCR catalyst technology ensures that Cummins will deliver the best fuel economy in the industry and total operating cost benefits to our customers.”
