Chrysler LLC Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle (CPOV) Program Starts 2008 Posting Sales Record

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., |PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler LLC today reported that its Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge dealers sold a new monthly sales record of 9,783 Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles (CPOV) in January 2008, a 7 percent increase from 2007 sales of 9,106 units.

For the month, Chrysler brand sales rose 6 percent to 3,116 units, while the Jeep and Dodge brand each rose 8 percent to 2,435 units and 4,232 units, respectively. Vehicles starting 2008 with sales gains include the Chrysler PT Cruiser up 24 percent; the Jeep Wrangler up 22 percent and the Dodge Ram pickup truck up 13 percent.

"We are happy to start the year on such a positive note," Peter Grady -- Director, Remarketing and Fleet Operations, said. "And with Chrysler's recent announcement to expand CPOV program eligibility to all qualifying Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealers in the United States, we look for the program to grow and sales to continue in this direction."

Marketed as "Brand Spankin' Used(R)," Chrysler Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles are sold only through Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships that have had a comprehensive validation of the dealership's facilities, operational processes, salesperson and technician training accreditation before they are authorized to sell Chrysler Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles.

For a vehicle to be certified under Chrysler's used-vehicle program, it must be a 2003 through 2008 model pre-owned vehicle with less than 65,000 miles and pass a stringent 125-point mechanical, safety and condition standard inspection. Chrysler Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles are backed by an eight- year/80,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, 24-hour, 365-day full roadside assistance with a $35 per day rental car allowance and a three-month or 3,000- mile Maximum Care warranty that is added to any remaining 3-year/36,000-mile comprehensive new vehicle warranty.

In addition, Chrysler Financial consistently offers special financing programs for qualified CPOV buyers, and along with the Carfax vehicle history report, a Carfax limited buyback guarantee is offered as part of its certified pre-owned vehicle program partnership with the automaker.

Chrysler plants resume full production after supplier dispute

Business Reporter

Full production at two Chrysler Canada assembly plants resumed yesterday after temporary settlement of a dispute with a U.S. parts supplier under court protection.

The company had cut each shift by about four hours at the Brampton and Windsor plants. The U.S. parent cut four similar operations in the United States on Monday because of a halt in parts shipments from Plastech Engineered Products Inc.

But Chrysler spokesperson Ed Saenz said full production started again following an agreement between the two companies to assure deliveries of parts such as door panels until Feb.15.

The dispute affected about 9,000 workers at the two Ontario plants and reduced production by several hundred vehicles over two days.

Plastech, which is based in the Detroit area, said it sought and gained bankruptcy court protection in the U.S. last week to stop Chrysler from taking tooling at its parts plants. Chrysler owns the tooling but Plastech is challenging any removal.

Plastech has 35 operations and about 7,300 employees in the U.S. They make hundreds of parts ranging from floor consoles to grill panels and engine covers.

The company has one plant in Leamington, Ont., that employs more than 300 people.

Chrysler planning to make deep cuts in models

SAN FRANCISCO -- Chrysler LLC, undergoing a rapid realignment, is making plans to cut the number of models it sells by perhaps half as it also moves aggressively to slim down its dealer network, according to people briefed on the plans.

The Auburn Hills automaker has been working under its so-called Project Alpha to get more of its dealers to sell all three of its brands -- Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep -- under one roof. But Chrysler, purchased last year by private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, has realized it must work to eliminate duplication in its product lineup to speed the process, the Free Press was told.

Alpha is only good if you don't have competing nameplates underneath the same franchises," a dealer told the Free Press. Chrysler has about 3,700 dealers.

Alpha is being replaced by Project Genesis to eliminate more models and be more aggressive about dealer consolidation.

Dealers familiar with the new plan say they've not yet been told which models will be eliminated, nor have they been given a definite number.

Chrysler President Jim Press is slated to speak to Chrysler dealers in San Francisco this weekend during the National Automobile Dealers Association's annual meeting.

A Chrysler spokeswoman would not comment on the reports to the Free Press late Thursday.

A year ago at the dealers meeting, Steve Girsky, a former Morgan Stanley analyst and adviser to General Motors Corp. Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner, said that two-thirds of domestic-brand dealerships needed to go before the remaining stores would be as profitable as import-brand dealerships.

Other experts say that eliminating as few as 20% of domestic-brand dealers would be sufficient, but that would still involve thousands of dealerships across the country.

The Free Press reported last summer that excess dealerships cost the Detroit automakers as much as $4 billion a year. Dealers who sell Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler average fewer than 600 sales per store each year. Those selling Toyota, Honda or Nissan average more than 1,200.

Many dealers, however, are reluctant to sell their businesses, and state franchise laws protect dealers from being forced out of business, giving them leverage in negotiating a price.

Since Cerberus took control in August, Chrysler, as the first major U.S. automaker to be privately held in more than 50 years, has moved quickly. In November, Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli announced the elimination of as many as 12,000 jobs on top of 13,000 already planned. At the time, he also cut four models, including the Chrysler Crossfire and Dodge Magnum.

He also has indicated the automaker could sell as many as 200,000 fewer vehicles in the less-desirable fleet market.

Dealers in Detroit heard about Genesis during a Feb. 1 meeting with top Chrysler executives, who pointed to Boston as an example of how their consolidation efforts need to work, according to people familiar with the meeting. The Boston market has about 27 dealers. Under the new Genesis plan, Boston might have nine dealers.

Late last year, Chrysler denied reports in the Wall Street Journal that the automaker was contemplating a plan to eliminate as many as 1,000 dealers. Under the Boston example, one dealer said the 1,000 seemed possible.

"If you're a single-point store, you may only have a couple vehicles to sell. Your future is with the big three" -- Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep, another dealer said Thursday.

To help speed up consolidation, Chrysler is working through its regional business centers to help put together deals to sell or buy franchises, according to people familiar with the actions.

One dealer, who attended the meeting, said Chrysler actively is soliciting ideas from dealers on what they want to do and suggested that Cerberus would be involved in ways, such as providing experts on finance, real estate and, possibly loans, to help accelerate the process.

When Cerberus first acquired Chrysler from DaimlerChrysler AG, some dealers speculated that the private-equity firm planned to spend big money to help consolidate quicker. Chrysler, which was on track to lose $1.6 billion last year, seems to be watching its cash flow very closely. That could damper dealers' hopes of a big payout.

Jim Press: little trucks could be big

click above for more pics of the 2002 Dodge M80 Concept

Jim Press thinks that there's an emerging market for small, fuel efficient trucks. You know, the kind of trucks his former employer, Toyota, used to build. Press put in 37 years at Toyota, and he saw the evolution of the HiLux into the Tacoma, which is no longer the diminutive hauler it once was. Press owns a second home in Thailand, and observing how trucks are used in that country leads him to believe that there's a worldwide need for a small, versatile pickup. Dodge's Dakota saw its sales drop by one third between 2006 and 2007, and Press thinks that's likely due to buyers shifting to crossovers.

There's not a whole lot of incentive to buy a midsize truck right now – they cost nearly the same as an entry level full sizer, the mileage is only marginally better, and the size differential isn't that great. We can recall two Dodge concept pickups of the recent past that we think buyers who miss the small pickup market might take a liking to. First, there's the 2006 Dodge Rampage Concept, which packed a lot of utility in a small footprint. Then there's the 2002 Dodge M80 Concept, one of the few Chrysler concepts that got a great reception but wasn't produced. Put the M80 into production on a unibody platform with some unique powertrain options, Jim. Trust us, you won't be sorry.

Photoshop: Plymouth Chrysler Barracuda concept

Click either image for a high-res gallery.

When Chrysler trotted out the 'Cuda concept this past November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, our first thought, after wanting to give it our lunch money, was that it might be one of the few examples in recent memory where Chrysler's badge engineering boffins couldn't drop the ball. A Photoshop wizard from Sao Paulo, Brazil by the name of Rafael Reston figured that Chrysler wasn't working fast enough (if at all) and decided to mock up his own interpretation of a Barracuda revival. While we're not entirely sold on the styling cues he chose, which straddle the line between concept car gauche and an art student's waste basket, we still like the idea. But it's highly doubtful that Chrysler has the time or resources to pour into a low-volume seller that has the possibility of cannibalizing sales from the Challenger.

Chrysler's Nardelli Says Firm To Shift Contracts From Plastech

By Jeff Bennett

Chrysler Chief Executive Robert Nardelli said Wednesday the company is going to continue with its plan to move its parts contracts away from Plastech Engineered Products Inc. to other suppliers.

"This was not hard-ball tactics, it was a solid business practice," Mr. Nardelli said on the sidelines of the Chicago Auto Show, referring to its decision last week to pull contracts with Plastech. "We never meant to create an adversarial relationship with ...

There's a waiting list for '09 models

CHICAGO -- Dodge expects to sell 20,000 to 30,000 of its retro-styled Challenger sport coupes a year once the full model line goes on sale, Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press said Wednesday at the Chicago Auto Show.

For the 2008 model year, though, Dodge will only offer the 425-horsepower high-performance $37,995 Challenger SRT8. The whole production run of 6,400 cars is sold out and will appear at dealers in the spring, Press said.

"There's already a waiting list for 2009 models," he added.

Chrysler is to unveil the 2009 Challenger at the New York Auto Show next month. The Challenger family will probably grow next year to include lower-priced models with less-powerful engines. A convertible is also possible.

Dodge touted several key technical features as advantages versus the Ford Mustang, the Challenger's most obvious competitor. The Challenger will come with standard antilock brakes, electronic stability control, curtain air bags, six-speed automatic transmission and keyless ignition.

The five-passenger Challenger uses the same basic structure as the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans. Like them, it features a five-link rear suspension, a layout that's widely considered more advanced than the Mustang's solid rear axle.

"We'd rather run like a thoroughbred than ride like a pony," Frank Klegon, Chrysler vice president of product development, said in a thinly veiled jab at the Mustang.

Dodge set its sights high, pointing out that the Challenger SRT8's 170-m.p.h. top speed is faster than the $82,900 500-horsepower BMW M5 super sedan and that the 6.1-liter Hemi V8 produces more torque than a $126,200 Porsche 911 turbo.

"When you sit inside, it makes you feel younger and richer than you are," Press said.

He insists that the Challenger's appeal goes beyond aging baby boomers who remember the original 1970 Challenger muscle car, however.

"Young people are discovering the car on their own," he said. "They're drawn to it because it's great-looking, emotional, fun to drive and roomy."

Chrysler builds the car at its Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant.

Challenger muscle car arrives just in time

The Dodge Challenger can reach 170 mph

Richard Truett Automotive News February 6, 2008 - 3:36 pm ET CHICAGO -- Chrysler LLC's Bob Nardelli thinks the new Challenger muscle car has the potential to draw buyers into Dodge showrooms and boost sales of the automaker's other vehicles.
" It couldn't come at a better time in our business cycle," the Chrysler CEO said at a press conference today at the Chicago Auto Show, unveiling the production version.

Chrysler sold 137,392 vehicles in January, a 12.0 percent drop from a year earlier. In 2007 company U.S. sales slipped 3.1 percent from the previous year to 2,076,650 vehicles.
In April, Chrysler will begin selling the 1970s-style, 425-hp coupe -- equipped with a Hemi V-8 engine. Nardelli said he thinks buyers who haven't been in a Dodge showroom in years will come and look at the car -- and take a new look at Dodge vehicles. " It says a lot about Dodge, and it will help attract new customers and old ones, too," he said.

While much has leaked out about the highly anticipated muscle car, Jim Press, Chrysler's vice chairman and co-president, made some numbers official. Challenger will bolt from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, giving better performance than a Porsche 911 Carrera, he said.

It has a top speed of 170 mph. And its giant Brembo disc brakes will haul the car to a stop from 60 mph in just 110 feet.

Frank Klegon, Chrysler's product development boss, said production will be kept under 100,000. He said Chrysler's Mopar parts division will have plenty of performance parts available for the car at launch.

Chrysler plans to build a six-cylinder base model, Klegon said, but he wouldn't say when it will arrive.

Chicago Auto Show: First Live Shots Of 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

2008_Dodge_Challenger_SRT8_Sneak.jpgGiven how bad the photoshopping was of the original 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, we thought you'd like some live shots. And while those shots weren't supposed to go up for another few hours, our intrepid photographer managed to catch one de-robed, as it were, during a rehearsal for the big reveal.

Oil retreats on bigger crude supply

Price dips below $88 a barrel as inventory report shows strength in gasoline and distillates as well.

What's driving oil prices?
CNN's Ali Velshi explains what's behind crude's triple-digit gusher.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices fell Wednesday after the government said supplies of crude rose more than expected last week.

U.S. light crude for March delivery tumbled $1.15 to $87.26. Oil had traded up 10 cents to $88.51 just prior to the report's release.

In its weekly inventory report, the Energy Information Administration said crude stocks rose by 7 million barrels last week. Analysts were looking for a rise of 2.6 million barrels, according to a Dow Jones poll.

Distillates, used to make heating oil and diesel fuel, rose by 100,000 barrels while gasoline supplies rose by 3.6 million barrels. Analysts were looking for a 1.8 million barrel dip in distillates supplies and a 1.8 million rise in gasoline stockpiles. To top of page

Chrysler workers expected back today

Workers at Chrysler LLC's Newark assembly plant are scheduled to return to work today after the automaker reached an interim agreement Tuesday with parts supplier Plastech Engineered Products Inc.

Chrysler, the third-largest U.S. automaker, abruptly shut five of its plants on Monday in a dispute with Dearborn, Mich.-based Plastech, which supplies the automaker with about 500 different types of plastic parts for the interiors, exteriors and powertrains of Chrysler vehicles. The company is also a big supplier to the other members of the Big Three automakers, General Motors and Ford.

The Chrysler shutdown temporarily idled about 10,500 workers, including the 958 workers at the Newark facility who make the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen sport utility vehicles. Chrysler plants in Rockford, Ill., Sterling Heights, Mich., and two plants in Toledo, Ohio, were also affected. Workers at those plants returned to work either Tuesday or today.

Under the agreement, Plastech will resume shipping parts to Chrysler through Feb. 15, the scheduled date for a U.S. court hearing in the matter. The dispute centers on the automaker's efforts to get its equipment, used for making plastic parts for Chrysler vehicles, back from Plastech, said Erich Merkle, an auto industry analyst with IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"If Plastech shuts down, the Big Three shut down," he said.

The dispute points out the increasingly strained relations between U.S. automakers, which are trying to cut costs, and parts suppliers -- many of which are struggling financially.

"The Big Three don't think you should be making money if you're a supplier, because they're not making money," Merkle said. "They're finding out they can't make a car if their suppliers aren't healthy."

Japanese automakers, such as Toyota and Nissan, have largely been able to avoid these problems because they're more aware that their suppliers need to be financially viable, Merkle said.

"They're tough and they want a good price, no question," Merkle said of the Japanese automakers' approach. "But they're much more committed to making sure their suppliers are financially healthy."

Merkle said he expects Chrslyer to reach a long-term agreement with Plastech to keep parts flowing beyond Feb. 15.

"They still have to figure out what to do in the long term," he said. "I think Chrysler's going to do what it has to do because they understand the implications."

Chrysler announced last year it plans to close its Newark facility by the end of 2009.

Just over two years after debuting as a concept at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, the Dodge Challenger is now ready to hit the streets for real. The Challenger is reviving a name last used in the late '70s and early '80s on a compact, four-cylinder Mitsubishi-built coupe. This time, though, Chrysler is going back to the roots of the brand with a big muscular rear-wheel-drive coupe, initially available exclusively with a 6.1L HEMI V8 that will power the new Challenger 60 mph in the low 5-second range, according to a very conservative Chrysler. It shares the automaker's LX platform with the Charger and Chrysler 300, and in final form, the car has changed remarkably little from the concept. The most noticeable differences are up front and include the loss of the cross-hair grille and a slim black air dam at the bottom of the bumper. Other changes are pretty subtle, such as some reshaping of the lower air intake.

Out back, the rear bumper is now more prominent and the detailing of the taillights has been revised. A flat black lip spoiler is now mounted on the trailing edge of the deck lid while the Challenger badges on the rear fenders have been dumped. The rear driver side fender now also features a prominent chrome fuel filler cap. The wheelbase of the LX platform has been shrunk from a gargantuan 120 inches for the sedans to a merely large 116 inches for the Challenger. That puts the span between the axles at 9 inches longer the Mustang, which aids interior volume. Read on after the jump for more.

For the truncated 2008 model year run, Dodge will only be building 6,400 Challengers, all in SRT8 form. That means all examples will be powered by the the same 6.1L HEMI with 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque as other SRT8 variants. Although enthusiasts might be disappointed, the reality is that most American buyers probably won't care that 2008 Challengers will only come in two-pedal, self-shifting form. Starting in 2009, Chrysler is expected to add availability of the 5.7L HEMI, as well as a V6. Putting power and torque to the pavement is the responsibility of 245/45 front and 255/45 rear Goodyear F1 tires on 20-inch wheels.

The interior design picks up many components from its platform mates, such as the steering wheel, instrument cluster and switchgear, otherwise the rest of the dash is unique to this model. The cluster hood is shaped something like the version in the concept, but unfortunately the rest of the dash appears to be a cost-reduced setup compared to the original. Hopefully it looks better in person than it does in these photos. Fortunately, the seats appear to brought over from other SRT models with their enormous bolsters that will easily keep the driver positioned directly in front of the steering wheel.

Thanks to its proportions, the Challenger doesn't look as large as it is. But make no mistake, this is a big car. It's actually one inch longer than the Chrysler 300 and is rated for three passengers in the rear compartment. Pricing will start at $37,995 for the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, and the limited production means that dealers will surely be charging a couple of bucks extra if they think they can get away with it. We'll be patiently waiting for our turn to get behind the wheel of Chrysler's new performance coupe at the earliest available opportunity. Hopefully a nasty rumor about Chrysler eliminating its press fleet as a cost cutting measure doesn't come to fruition.

Some official photos of the Dodge Challenger's interior have been posted on Allpar's forums, and our spirits have been buoyed. It's always hard to get a read on the real-world look and feel of the interior plastics, but from what we can make out amidst the dither, all is not lost when it comes to the Challenger's front office. In these pictures, the interior looks very presentable, though it seems to be pretty standard LX fare. The SRT8 models get nicely trimmed seats, with contrasting french stitching on the deep bolsters, suede inserts to grip your backside, and a nice splash of orange to set off the SRT logo. Lesser Challengers will obviously not get quite the full boat luxe treatment that the SRT gets, with its MyGig, bespoke gauges, and leather adornments, but just what will get pulled out remains to be seen. The Mustang and Camaro might have more exciting designs, but the ergonomics and controls in the revived Dodge ponycar look well thought out. We've breathed a half-sigh of relief after our last round of interior spy shots, which left some of us certain that the Challenger's interior was going to be bested by what came in the unlamented K-Cars. Thanks for the tip, indymcsc!
