2008 Neiman Marcus Special Edition Hennessey Venom 700NM - Auto Shows

From the press-releases-we-never-thought-we’d-see file comes the announcement of the 2008 Neiman Marcus Special Edition Hennessey Venom 700NM, a car with a name long enough to pretty much tell the entire story, full as it is of contradiction and detail and excitement about a car that is equal parts white trash and fat-cat aristocrat. What’s next? The Kmart Blue Light Special Phantom drophead coupĂ©?

That’s right. Instead of the usual sassy AMG Benz or M-powered Bimmer, Neiman Marcus thought it would be a good idea to offer a souped-up Dodge Viper in the pages of this year’s men’s catalog, complete with special touches such as jet-black paint, a red-and-black leather-trimmed custom interior, matching fitted luggage (of course!), special badges, and more.

Hennessey’s contribution to this whole mess includes a naturally aspirated version of the Viper’s 8.4-liter V-10 engine tuned to 700 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque; upgraded brakes, wheels, and suspension pieces; and an aero kit brazen enough to turn the Viper into a machine capable of offending even more Neiman Marcus customers than the standard Viper can do on its own. Can we mention the heinous rear wing?

If nothing else, it will be fast. Hennessey claims the Venom 700NM coupe can hit 60 in 3.3 seconds on its way to a rather elevated top speed of 214 mph. And we expect that a trunk full of the wife’s makeup and shoes shouldn’t slow it down too much.

All of this will come at a price of $179,500, which includes a three-year/36,000-mile warranty and, thankfully, a full-day driving school at Lonestar Motorsports Park near Hennessey’s Houston-based bunker to help keep the buyers, likely unaccustomed to driving such unruly beasts, from killing themselves (and others) at the first stab of the throttle.

Kidding aside, we have no problem with Hennessey or Neiman Marcus, however unlikely their alliance. But will two rights make a wrong? We’ll probably never find out ourselves, as only seven Venom 700NMs will be built, with no breakdown of how many will be coupes or convertibles.

If this sounds like your cup of, uh, venom, get yourself on the horn to 877-885-7077 promptly at 9:00 a.m. PST on Monday, April 10, 2008

Racing series BGTC
Date 2008-03-17

BARNES TO RACE IN THE BRITISH GT CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2008

Jon Barnes is pleased to announce that he has secured a seat with Brookspeed Motorsport in their 'Team Trimite' Dodge Viper Competition Coupe for the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship.

The 24-year-old from Whiteley, Hampshire will be partnered by his old karting rival - James Gornall in the two driver endurance series, with the first races of the Championship to be held at Oulton Park in Cheshire this coming Easter weekend.

Barnes said, "I am really pleased to be back in the cockpit for a full season of racing this year. It is going to be a very tough season ahead, but I am confident that myself, my team mate James, and Brookspeed Team Trimite can go out and surprise the other teams and drivers with our competitiveness this season. "

It will once again be a baptism of fire for Jon, as the first time he gets to drive the car will be at Oulton Park in Friday's free practice sessions. The Dodge Viper has an 8.3 litre V10 engine, kicking out 520 bhp and 730 Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and on to 193 mph top speed.

Jon will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for pictures on Thursday 20 March, when the Brookspeed Team Trimite Viper will be on display at Coopers Square Shopping Centre in Burton upon Trent before the team heads up the road to compete in the opening rounds of the British GT Championship. The car and drivers will take centre stage in the Main Square from 10.00 to 17.30, offering hundreds of happy shoppers the chance to win tickets, Grid Walk passes and a behind-the-scenes visit to the Brookspeed Team Trimite pit garage at the Oulton Park race.

In addition, the Scalextric roadshow will roar into the centre giving shoppers the chance to try their hand or even challenge the drivers. Although many people may never have the pleasure of driving a racing car, Coopers Square shoppers can be a racing driver for the day on the new amazing Scalextric Digital layout featuring a multi-lane track, and one figure of eight drift circuit.

Jon Barnes is proud to be supported this season by Technart Printers, Headliners Hair Salon, Attley's Roofing, Shredding For Bedding, LA Fitness and Arai Helmets.

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship races are shown in half-hour programmes on Channel 4 Television and in hour-long programmes on MotorsTV. Please check Jon's website for up-to-date broadcast information.

2008 Hennessey Venom 650R - Car News

With minimal effort, Hennessey keeps the Viper ahead in the ‘Mine’s Bigger’ race.

Consider that, in the 16 years since the launch of the Dodge Viper and the already numerous face-offs between it and the king of American performance icons, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Viper has always held the upper hand in the horsepower battle. With the upcoming 2009 Corvette ZR1 promising more than the 2008 Viper’s 600 horsepower, John Hennessey is here to reassure the Viper community that they can maintain the advantage they have grown so accustomed to.

For $11,500 (including installation), Hennessey Performance Engineering in Sealy, Texas, will upgrade any 2008 Viper, coupe or roadster, to Venom 650R spec. The name is slightly misleading because the final horsepower count is in fact 678, but who would want Venom 678R plastered on the car’s flanks?

When you start with 8.4 liters and 600 horsepower, an increase of 78 demands only a K&N air filter and a tweaked exhaust featuring custom headers, aftermarket catalytic converters, and high-flow mufflers. That’s it. The only other performance upgrade is two-piece brake rotors, which save eight pounds per corner. Otherwise, the price of entry nets buyers a laundry list of “look at me!” features: “Powered by Hennessey” valve-cover badges, Hennessey and Venom 650R exterior badges, a Hennessey windshield banner, “Hennessey Venom Power” floor mats, and serial-numbered plaques on the dash and in the engine bay.

2008 Dodge Viper SRT10

Chrysler LLC has announced that production has begun on the new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10.

Each hand-built Viper is bestowed with the all-new 600hp (450kW) and 760Nm 8.4-litre SRT aluminium V10 engine.

This additional horsepower - 90hp more to be exact - rockets the Viper to 100km/h in less than four seconds, setting a new benchmark for the all-American muscle car.

At the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit you won’t find any robots.Instead 48 workers attending 26 stations on a 214 metre assembly line build the Viper by hand.

“Compared to our other manufacturing facilities, this is a very labour-intensive plant, but to build the Dodge Viper any other way wouldn’t be right. This small craft shop allows us to produce a true American legend.”

Each Viper is tested in place on the assembly line using a rolling road, where it is shifted through each of the six cogs to 90mph (150km/h) to verify vehicle function.

Normally reserved only for race cars, the suspension is adjusted by an alignment machine which sets caster and camber at normal ride height, at jounce and at rebound (upward and downward travel of suspension) - this is a first for a factory US production vehicle.

In addition to the new engine, the 2008 Viper features increased levels of customisation with five new exterior colours, four new interior colour combinations and a new wheel design.

Whilst Dodge have tested the waters in Australia with the Nitro, Caliber and Avenger models, there are no plans to add the left-hand drive only Viper to its line up.
