Meet the fleet

Innovations are the key to a turnaround

The Chrysler Group unveiled more details Thursday about its new engine, transmission and axle programs that aim to improve fuel efficiency, a key component to the company's plan to regain profitability.

More than four months into Chrysler's turnaround plan, several key pieces have been falling into place -- even as the sale of Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management has deflected attention from what's occurring at the Auburn Hills headquarters.

"As we implement our recovery and transformation plan, product remains the top priority. We know we must build vehicles that customers want to buy," said Frank Klegon, Chrysler executive vice president of product development.

Two major pieces of the way Chrysler wants to remake itself over the next three years involve more fuel-efficient vehicles and higher sales outside North America.

The turnaround plan aims to end the red ink. The company lost $680 million last year and $2 billion in the first quarter of this year, the latter largely because of costs associated with the turnaround.

Part of Chrysler's problem has been its truck-heavy lineup at a time when gasoline reached record prices and consumers are worried about fuel efficiency.

In recent weeks the company has been busy breaking ground on new powertrain facilities around North America, including an engine plant in Trenton and an axle plant in Marysville, as part of its $3-billion push to develop engines, transmissions and axles that will get better gas mileage.

On Thursday, Klegon said the Phoenix family of V6 engines being developed for use in 2010 will improve fuel efficiency as much 8% and that the company is looking to expand its use of hybrid technology.

In addition, Klegon said, the development of a new dual-clutch transmission, which is designed to be as efficient as a manual transmission but with the ease of an automatic, should improve gas mileage up to 6%.

Chrysler also is looking to improve fuel economy 5% by reducing vehicle weight, improving aerodynamics and making other drivetrain improvements.

How all of these improvements taken together will affect the overall gas mileage of a given Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle can't be determined yet, officials said, because of the differences in the vehicles and how the elements interact.

Auto industry analyst George Magliano of Global Insight said Chrysler's turnaround plan is "moving in the right direction" and pointed to some positive notes, such as the apparent quick pace to finalize the sale of Chrysler, hourly workers' high interest in buyouts and the recent indication by UAW President Ron Gettelfinger that the union needs to help Chrysler with health care issues.

But Magliano said, "They still have a long way to go."

He cautioned that the efforts to improve fuel efficiency will take time to prove out. "That's a great goal, but that's more press than substance right now," he said. "Chrysler's product line is heavily weighted to trucks. ... They are one of the premier guys with big engines."

Another element of the turnaround plan that's garnered a lot of attention is the target of reducing the workforce by 13,000 people over three years. Already 7,600 hourly workers raised their hands for buyout and early-retirement packages offered to lower the headcount this year -- 1,700 more than the company planned for in 2007.

A little less headline-grabbing is what is happening to reduce material costs. One change is being made in how Chrysler delivers materials.

Chrysler used to employ 30 carriers to ship material along nearly 300 routes within a 200-mile radius of core manufacturing facilities. The company opened it all up to competitive bidding and narrowed it to two carriers.

The change is expected to save $9 million this year.

The company has said it wants to reduce material costs up to $1.5 billion by 2009. "We are ahead of our objectives on the cost side," Klegon said.

In addition, on Thursday Klegon announced that Chrysler will explore the possibility of using four-cylinder diesel engines in the U.S. market and more of the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engines already used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler has diesel engines in the Dodge Sprinter and Ram Heavy Duty and announced plans last winter for a new Cummins turbodiesel to be available in light-duty pickups after 2009.

Klegon said the four-cylinder diesel engine would have the ability to power a minivan.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

What's new inside

On Thursday, Frank Klegon, Chrysler's executive vice president of product development, gave several new details about the automaker's strategy for upcoming engine developments:

* The new V6 engine family, dubbed the Phoenix, will improve fuel efficiency 6% to 8%. Some of the improvement will come from the ability to operate on three cylinders when less power is required.

* The newly designed dual-clutch transmission, to be built near Kokomo, Ind., will improve fuel economy as much as 6%.

* The new 4.7-liter V8 will get 5% better fuel efficiency and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 will be upgraded for 2009.

* The company will explore using four-cylinder diesel engines in the United States and expanding the use of the 3.0-liter V6 diesel that's already in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

* Chrysler will bring to market the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Bluetech diesel engine, meeting all state diesel regulations.

* The automaker plans to expand its hybrid program beyond the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango coming out next year. Within a few years, the automaker says it will offer a mild hybrid -- a less-expensive system for improving fuel economy.

Tower clear for Cerberus

AUTO HEADLINES

Tower Automotive Inc., the world's biggest maker of auto frames, passed a deadline to receive competing bids for its business, clearing the way for a sale to Cerberus Capital Management LP for about $1 billion.

Tower, in bankruptcy since 2005, won approval in April of an outline for reorganization that would include a sale to Cerberus if no other bids were received before Thursday.

The price would give unsecured creditors less than 1 cent on each dollar owed. Bondholders would get a return of about 1.9%. If Cerberus, a private equity group based in New York, had been outbid for Tower, money available to creditors might have increased.

UAW warns retirees

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger told a group of members in Marion, Ind., this week that he will work to protect retiree health-care benefits, but said some change may be needed, according to a report published Thursday by Marion's Chronicle-Tribune newspaper.

Gettelfinger declined to speculate on issues that his union and the domestic automakers will negotiate during contract talks set to begin next month. He did, however, recount a story about an exchange he had with a retiree who was adamant that the UAW should accept no compromise when it comes to preserving benefits.

CHELSEA -- Chrysler Group unveiled an array of technologies to improve the fuel economy of its Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands as part of its $3 billion investment in engines, transmission and powertrain components.

Frank Klegon, vice president of product development, announced the initiatives Thursday at Chrysler's Proving Grounds during a media preview of its 2008 model lineup. Most of the information about the vehicles is embargoed.

Chrysler's initiative comes as lawmakers in Washington wrangle over how high to raise the fuel economy standards -- known as Corporate Average Fuel Economy -- of the nation's cars and trucks.

"These are all different things we are pursuing," Klegon said. "They are decisions that are consumer driven, not regulatory driven."

Chrysler only touched on some of its powertrain highlights and hinted at other possible plans, saying many of its efforts would create cleaner, more efficient vehicles in the near future.

As an example, Klegon pointed to the 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid, a gas-electric hybrid developed with General Motors Corp and the BMW Group, which was parked nearby. Chrysler engineers have added a few tricks to the 5.7-liter Hemi, available as an engine option, to include the use of electric motors while cruising to boost highway mileage, something currently unavailable on SUVs.

Chrysler intends to focus its gas-electric hybrid system on SUVs, though it is not ruling out cars in the future. Mercedes-Benz could introduce a hybrid car developed from the same technology as early as next year.

Klegon confirmed Chrysler would develop a mild hybrid for some vehicles. The system shuts off the engine whenever the vehicle stops, but still keeps things like the air conditioning running and uses regenerative brakes to help recharge the car's battery.

Its other plans include:

  • Introducing the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee BLUETEC diesel, which will meet emission standards in all 50 states.
  • Building more vehicles with the 3-liter V-6 diesel engine (currently in the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee), as well as exploring the introduction of a four-cylinder diesel in the U.S.
  • Including a multi-displacement system on Chrysler's new V-6 engine family so three valves can shut off while cruising, when less power is needed.
  • Improving the powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 to make it more fuel efficient.

"We have to fight this battle on many fronts," Klegon said. "We're not going to just sit around."

The ambitious plans could help Chrysler's fleet, though it's uncertain which plans will come to fruition, said Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with AutoPacific.

However, pending changes to CAFE standards, which regulate fuel efficiency, could ultimately decide the fate of some programs.

"The magic question right now is what is CAFE going to be," she said.

Brinley said some ideas could strike a chord with consumers who want cars with better gas mileage.

For example, Klegon said Chrysler was making its 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine capable of direct injection. That could create a more powerful and more efficient engine. However, Chrysler would not confirm whether it would use it in the marketplace.

Many consumers prefer smaller four-cylinder engines. About 73 percent of the 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedans sold were four-cylinder models. Chrysler builds about 800,000 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines a year.

Chrysler is also partnering with Detroit-based NextEnergy to find more ways to develop biofuels, such as B20, a diesel fuel that is 20 percent biofuel.

The company is also working with Michigan State University and the Environmental Protection Agency to reuse a brownfield site in Detroit to grow crops for biodiesel.

  • Monza: Round four preview

    Racing series FIA-GT
    Date 2007-06-22

On to Monza for the fastest weekend of the season !

After the traditional June break, the 2007 season of the FIA GT Championship will get underway again with the fourth round, at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, near Milan, in Italy. This historic and extremely popular track, the fastest visited in the season, has hosted the Championship on six previous occasions, the most recent being the thrilling season-opener in 2005.

In the past, Monza has seen two wins from Chrysler Vipers (Chrysler Viper Team Oreca in 1999, and Carsport Holland in 2000), one victory from the Lister Storm in 2001, and three wins for a Ferrari 550 Maranello : twice for BMS Scuderia Italia in 2003 and 2004, and once for Larbre Competition in 2005. It is therefore a near certainty that this year will see a new winner at Monza. But will it be an Aston Martin DBR9, a Corvette, a Lamborghini Murcielago or a Maserati MC 12 which steps up to the top of the podium ?

After three races, the points situation in GT1 could hardly be closer : a grand total of 18 drivers are separated by just ten points. The first three races have seen three different winners, and only two cars have managed two top-three placings : current Championship leaders Christophe Bouchut and Stefan Mucke in the All-Inkl.com Racing Lamborghini Murcielago, and PK Carsport's Corvette C5 duo of Anthony Kumpen and Bert Longin, who are currently tied in second place with Vitaphone's Thomas Biagi, who was victorious in Silverstone. A further two points behind are Scuderia Playteam Sarafree's all-Italian duo, Andrea Piccini and Andrea Bertolini, who won the Bucharest street race.

With two wins to date, the Maserati MC 12 has taken the lead in the Manufacturers Cup, while Vitaphone Racing has a healthy lead in the Teams Championship. Back in 2005, on the last visit to Monza, a Maserati quartet chased home the winning Ferrari of Gardel and Lamy, after the Corvette C5, making an astonishing debut, had to retire just laps from the chequered flag.

So who is likely to triumph in Monza ? Championship leaders Bouchut and Mucke will be carrying a total of 70 kg in their Lamborghini Murcielago, which could be telling on the fast, heavy braking circuit. As for the Maserati MC 12 cars, 2005 proved that the circuit suited them; Scuderia Playteam Sarafree will be keen to do well at home, while Vitaphone Racing Team should see the return of team leader Michael Bartels to the nr 1 car. The Corvettes have been strong this season, with a total of four podium appearances for PSI, PK Carsport and Carsport Holland; a first win must surely be on the cards soon. And the Aston Martin DBR9 is also looking for a first win of 2007. Jetalliance was extremely strong in Bucharest, with Robert Lechner qualifying extremely well and Wendlinger leading the race for much of the first hour. And Aston Martin Racing BMS will be on home territory, at a track where they triumphed in the past with their Ferrari : Monza would be a perfect place to claim their first win with the DBR9.

In total, 19 cars are due to compete in GT1 at Monza, while 11 in GT2 and G2 should give a grid of up to thirty cars, which should make a fine show for the spectators at this legendary circuit. Among the GT1 and G2 cars, up to seven Citation Cup competitors will battle for the magnificent trophy presented by the Cessna Corporation. SRT's Tom Cloet, current leader, will be paired for Monza with frequent FIA GT racer Mauro Casadei, and will be keen to claim the third win for his Corvette C5. But the competition will be fierce, with two JMB Racing Maserati MC 12 cars, two Ferraris -- a 550 Maranello from Solution F, and a 575 M Maranello from GT3 leaders Kessel Racing, a possible second Corvette from PSI and the Red Racing Chrysler Viper, G2 class winner in Silverstone.

While variety is the watchword in GT1, GT2 has seen some tremendous battles in the extremely high-quality field of Ferrari and Porsche cars, but has, to date, had just one winner : the AF Corse Motorola Ferrari 430 GT2 car of Dirk Muller and Toni Vilander. The runaway Championship leaders will have the maximum of 50 kg penalty weight -- plus 28 kg for having two professional drivers -- on board their car, which could make Monza more difficult. There are plenty waiting to claim their crown, including their team-mates Bruni and Ortelli in the nr 51 Ferrari, the two Scuderia Ecosse Ferrari cars, which should see the return of Tomas Enge, and the two Racing Team Edil Cris cars, which made an excellent debut in Silverstone. The Porsche contingent should not be ruled out either : BMS Scuderia Italia's Collard and Malucelli are currently third in the points, and were second in Bucharest, while Tech9 Motorsport has put in some excellent performances for its first season in GT2. Ebimotors were third here in 2005, behind the two GruppeM cars, and will be keen to repeat that podium performance. Monza will also see the debut of Belgian team Prospeed, entering a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR for Franz Lamot and Rudi Penders, who have both competed at Spa in previous years.

An extremely close and open field, plenty of excitement, and two hours of thrilling racing : round four of the 2007 FIA GT Championship should live up to all expectations !

More trucks stolen from raceway lot

HAZEL PARK -- Large concrete block barriers served as insurmountable blockades for about six months against thefts of new Chrysler vehicles stored at the Hazel Park Harness Raceway. But this month, thieves have found ways to circumvent the security measure.

Thieves on Wednesday stole three new Dodge Ram pickup trucks by ramming a guard's vehicle stationed at a gate along 10 Mile. On June 2, thieves fastened a steel chain to a concrete barrier and pulled it aside for an escape by four vehicles.

"They knocked the vehicle out of the way and fled," said Hazel Park Detective Lt. Michael Kolp about the latest thefts. "No one was hurt. The guard was visibly shaken at the scene, but not injured."

The ramming vehicle fled west on 10 Mile, while two other new Dodge Ram pickup trucks escaped east on 10 Mile.

Police pursued the westbound vehicle south on I-75 and west on Eight Mile where it went out of control and crashed at Woodward in Ferndale, Kolp said.

Police and a K-9 tracking team attempted to follow the driver who ran from the vehicle but wasn't caught, Kolp said.

However, Kolp said police are processing possible evidence from the abandoned vehicle.

"In my opinion, they need a safeguard to make the vehicles more secure," Kolp said about security at the race track. He declined to give more details for fear of tipping off would-be car thieves. Track officials couldn't be reached for comment.

Kolp doesn't believe the thefts involve inside help from a private security force patrolling parts of the track's approximately 120 acres where new Chrysler products are stored.

Backing his theory, Kolp added, is that a security guard shot and wounded one person in a fleeing vehicle in early 2005, plus the latest culprit had to ram a security vehicle to make an escape.

"More than likely it is a group of young people who have the means to sell wheels and radios for quick money," Kolp said. "Those are the main things we find missing."

Thefts of multiple new Chrysler vehicles from the race track have occurred at least five times since 2005, police said.

Kolp said a 17-year-old and a boy were caught following the June 2 thefts.

The large concrete barriers last December were placed around the fence on the east side along Dequindre and north side at 10 Mile at the race track where numerous Chrysler vehicles have been stored for more than five years.

At the time, track security director Peter Marvin said the track leased parking to Chrysler which provides security for the storage lots. Chrysler also paid for the installation of the concrete barriers, he said.
